| Jujube or Chinese Date (Ziziphus zizyphus) is a small deciduous tree or shrub in the buckthorn family Rhamnaceae. The immature fruit is smooth-green, and resembles the consistency and taste of an apple, but as it matures darkens to red and becomes wrinkled, looking like a small date (hence the name Chinese Date). There is a single hard stone. The fruits are used in Chinese traditional medicine, where they are believed to alleviate stress. The fruit is ground to powder, with very small amounts required to promptly calm nerves and purify blood quality.
Jujube is slightly sedative and removes obstructions of the energy flow. It is a nutrient tonic, a blood cleanser. It benefits digestion and absorption. Jujube is used in formulas with other herbs for its calming effects. |
